Whether you decide to do the preparation work yourself or have a professional do it as part of your project, proper preparation makes all the difference in creating a smooth and lasting finish. Do it correctly the first time or you’ll quickly end up spending more to fix peeling and chipping paint. Follow this process before starting on your home's exterior. Keep in mind that the process may vary based on your siding materials:
A fresh paint job has the power to totally transform the look of your house in less time and for less cash than any other remodeling project. That thin skin of resin and pigment also protects your investment, shielding it from sun, wind, and rain—until the paint begins to crack and peel, that is. Then it's time to button up with a couple of new coats. Properly applied, new paint should last for a good 15 years, provided you use top-quality materials, apply them with care (and with an eye on the weather), and, most important, clean and sand every surface first. Here's what you need to know to get a first-class finish on your home's exterior. Lafayette House Painting
“We used Phoenix house painting for both inside and outside of our house – inside they did 2 bedrooms and a bathroom and full exterior. John and Robin were very prompt in coming out to give a quote and spent about 20 minutes at the house and pointed out things I hadn’t even thought about. I had gotten quotes from 2 other companies that combined didn’t spend as much time going over the details with me.”  Lafayette House Painters
Being in the business for 25+ years I have had the privilege of working with thousands of clients. Although they all came from different circumstances and backgrounds they all had one common goal in mind. Every one of them wanted to be respected, receive top value for their money, and get the best possible paint job for their most prized possession, their house!
Painters often tint primer close to the color of the top coat, but Wallis thinks that's a recipe for "holidays," or missed spots. Instead, he tints his primer a contrasting color. "If I can see the color coming through, I know I need to apply more paint," he says. On the cottage shown in this story, he chose a gray-blue primer to go under a peach top coat. The last big decision is how to apply the paint. Most pros use paint sprayers because they're fast, but in inexperienced hands a high-powered sprayer can leave drips, thin coats, and a mist that may land on many things other than your siding. If you do hire a painter who uses a sprayer, make sure he is meticulous about removing, covering, or masking off everything in the area that might get hit with overspray: gutters, roofs, windows, shrubbery, walkways, cars—you name it. Small random-orbit or pad sanders make this job go faster. (Wallis first covers these boundaries with Synkoloid patching compound so no edge is visible after sanding.) As shown, you want to make sure that there is a feathered, smooth transition from exposed wood to old paint. For areas that might get close scrutiny, you can follow up with a 100- or 120-grit rubdown to erase any scratches. Lafayette House Painters
"Working with Walter was the best experience I’ve received from Thumbtack, Facebook Market Place, even Yelp! He and his team worked diligently and detailed! They stayed focused on the job. The job turned out amazing, I wish I took before pictures but he fixed so many issues I thought would never be fixed. The detail and care he took while doing the job was at another level. He found a way to get me what I wanted at a budget I could handle, communicated each step of the way even pausing in areas to get approval before making his own call (even though his suggestions were always used because they were AWESOME!). When it came to punctuality he was on time each day and when he realized a little more hours were needed he explained why and provided an accurate time. Once completed he walked me through asked me to find any and all imperfections and he will fix it right away. Not only will I continue to work with Walter and his team, I’m referring as many people to him as I can. You honestly can’t get any better delivery on work and genuineness from someone else. Thank you again Walter and Team!" Lafayette House Painting
